Promise for Jamie at the 'Ring
Jamie Green recorded his best finish of the 2007 DTM season at the Nurburgring, but while he was pleased with the pace he showed on his way to fifth place, he was left ruing a missed podium opportunity.
In qualifying, Jamie comfortably made the top eight shoot-out and lined up in sixth place for the race. At the start he lost a spot at the tight first corner, but his Mercedes-Benz team opted to run him for a long stint before his first pitstop, a move that should have helped vault him up the order. But there was a delay changing the front right tyre, costing him precious time.
Nevertheless he set about making up for the lost time. He was brought in after a short middle stint, and when back on track soon passed Mike Rockenfeller and Paul di Resta in strong overtaking moves. Now up to fourth, he catching Timo Scheider in third at over half a second a lap.
But just as Jamie was sizing up a move on the Audi, Mattias Ekstrom rejoined from his pitstop right on Jamie's tail. With his race-brain engaged in attack mode, he left the door open for Ekstrom to nip by and he slipped back to fifth.
“It was a good race right up until Ekstrom overtook me. I was so focused on passing Timo that I didn’t see Mattias was behind me. It’s frustrating, because I’d shown good pace up until that point.”
The next race gives Jamie the chance to make up for one of his most disappointing outings of 2006. In Barcelona last year he was taken out just four corners into the race after qualifying well down the field in the wet. However, his pace had been strong in the dry, and he’s optimistic of another good showing.
“For the first time in a long time the 2007 Mercedes and Audis are at the same weight, so that should be good for us,” he said. “The track is slower this year, since they added the chicane, but I think we should still have a good car.”
