Jamie fast but out of luck in Zandvoort
Jamie fast but out of luck in Zandvoort
Jamie Green left the Dutch round of the DTM touring car championship at Zandvoort with the fastest lap of the race, but without a point to add to his tally.
Jamie’s problems stemmed from qualifying, where circumstances conspired to leave him 18th on the grid for the race.
“I did an okay lap that put me 11th, but then the session was red-flagged and the extra two minutes added on until Q2 instead,” he revealed. “I left it quite late to go out for my run, but my times on the first and second sectors were already 0.6sec up and I was confident we would improve the time. But coming out of Turn 7 there was some gravel on the road. When I braked for the next corner – at the same place as always – the wheels locked and I went skidding off and into the gravel.
“I got the car back to the garage and the guys cleaned it up and I went out again. It was a bit of a cautious lap and the time wasn’t looking too good, so I really had to push in the final sector and I ran a bit wide and went over the sand again and that was that.”
From way back on the ninth row, Jamie made a strong start and was running well on the opening lap. But a slight mistake set him back in the final corner – and he believes this cost him a points finish.
“I went a bit wide and I had to lift off and this allowed Mathias Lauda and Susie Stoddart back through. It took me a while to pass them again, but after that the pace was really strong. When I came out after my final stop, there was a big train of cars behind Christian Abt in fifth. I really think if I hadn’t lost the time at the start, I could have leapt ahead of them all in the final pitstop.”
There’s a five-week break now before the next round at the Nurburgring. It’s Mercedes’ home track, and Jamie is hoping he’ll be able to demonstrate the strong pace he’s had in the last few races at the venue of the European GP.
“I’ve had the pace, but not the results. I’ve shown I can qualify well, and now the race pace is good – even my starts haven’t been too bad! I just need to relax and let my talent see me through.”
