Jamie mugged in Mugello

Jamie Green left Mugello empty handed despite having generally been the quickest of the 2007 Mercedes-Benz DTM runners all weekend.

On a track that seemed to favour the rival Audi A4s, Jamie hustled his car around in qualifying, and was one of only two Mercedes drivers to make the top 8 shoot-out. In the final session he recorded the seventh-best time, but while many of his team-mates were worried about their prospects for the race, he was more optimistic.

“The car felt good on the way to the grid and I thought I was going to be on for a good result. I made a good start and passed Timo Scheider and into the first corner I followed Bruno Spengler down the inside and that gained me a place on Alex Premat in Turn 2.”

In the early stages, Jamie ran close behind team-mate Spengler. He felt he had a clearly quicker car, but knew with the first of the two mandatory pitstops coming up he would soon be able to use his pace advantage to move up the order. But before he had a chance to put this plan into action disaster struck.

“I was following Bruno quite closely and I went a bit tight into the first corner and this put me a bit off line for Turn 2. I was about six inches over from where I wanted to be and this sent me across one of the metal discs they have on the outside of the kerbs. As soon as I hit it the suspension just broke and that was it! I was gobsmacked. A few other drivers have hit these this weekend and all it has done is damage the bodywork…no one has ended up with broken suspension. I’ve made one mistake in the whole weekend and it costs me a good result.”

Jamie’s retirement means he remains on 10.5 points, but has slipped to eighth in the points. The next race is at Zandvoort in two week’s time and Jamie is hopeful of turning his fortune around there.

“We had a really good car there last year and I was able to get pole position. We go there 20 kilos heavier than the Audis again, so it’s not going to be easy. At the moment I’m picking up the success ballast and not having any of the success! But I just have to keep working hard and the results will come.”
