Top Mercedes at Nurburgring

Hi

In free practice on Saturday morning the track was dry and we went through a few set up changes that we wanted to try and it went quite well for us.  We only had one set of new tyres, which we put on at the end of the session, which allowed us to set the 7th fastest time - we were happy with that!  I was also the highest Mercedes driver in this session.

In qualifying my 1st outing was good in QI was able to get into Q2 with only doing one outing, which saved us a new set of tyres.  In Q2 I had some traffic with Audis on my outlap which were going a lot slower than I wanted to go and that compromised my qualifying lap as I wasn’t able to get my tyres up to temperature and I struggled with the car balance and wasn’t able to achieve the lap time that I managed to do in Q1 and unfortunately I dropped out in Q2 in P11.  This was a shame as if I was able to have matched my time I did on Q1 then this would had put me through into Q3.

In the warm up on Sunday I was consistent but not as quick as I would have liked to have been so we decided to change the car set up for the race as I had a slight problem with the cars balance.

In the race I had a reasonable start, I managed to overtake mike Rockefeller on the exit of the first corner.  I saw a lot of action in front of me, there was a lot of contact on the first lap.  Tom Kristensen span across the track in front of me on the exit to turn 5 and I had to lift off as I wasn't sure which way he was going to spin across the track, this allowed Alexander Premat to overtake me so I was P9 and the safety car was deployed.  When the race restarted I was In P9 behind Premat and Oliver Jarvis and Premat tried to overtake Jarvis at turn one, they made contact and went wide which allowed me to gain two places and then I caught up Paul Di Resta who was struggling a bit after contact from the first lap.  When Paul pitted for his first stop I had some clear track in front of me, which allowed me to put in some competitive and consistent laps.  We opted for a late first pit stop, when I came out of the pits I was behind Bruno Spengler and in front of Ralf Schumacher.  My pace meant I caught Bruno up quickly, He then decided to pit quite early for his second stop and I stayed out.  My team did a really good job of the pitstops I managed to put in some quick laps before I pitted and was able to come out in front of Bruno - I was now up to P5. By the end of the race I was over 4 seconds clear of Bruno and finished top Mercedes driver.  I was really happy with the job that I did in the race and for the job that Team Persson did in setting up the car.
