Points but frustration for Jamie at Lausitz

Jamie Green added three more points to his DTM tally at the EuroSpeedway in Lausitz, but his sixth-place finish wasn’t a true reflection of his potential in the race.

Jamie lost out on a better finish through a combination of bad luck, imperfect strategy and a bizarre double safety car period, during the first of which the top two gained a lap on the entire field!

After strong qualifying pace, Jamie easily made it through to the top eight pole position shoot-out, but an error on his fast lap resulted in a trip across the grass.

“I was pushing too hard and I went off. I think it cost me about 0.4sec, so to still qualify fifth shows how much higher up I could have been.”

Jamie made a solid start and was up with Bernd Schneider ahead of him, but the fast-starting Alex Premat made it three abreast into the new, tighter first corner. Jamie decided to brave it out around the outside, but was tapped by Mattias Ekstrom, and had to drop back into line in sixth place.

He was stuck behind his former F3 team-mate Premat and despite being quicker, couldn’t find a way past. The team decided to bring him in early for his first stop, banking on his pace on fresh tyres to climb up the order.

“The team was hoping I would come out ahead of traffic, but I ended up in a big group of cars and I lost a lot of time trying to pass Vanina Ickx and Christian Abt.”

Jamie’s second stop was called after the safety car was deployed. However, the pace of the safety car was so slow, that when leaders Mika Hakkinen and Paul di Resta pitted, they were able to pass it in the pit lane and gain a lap on the field! Because of this, the race stewards decided to send the safety out again to hand the lap back to the other runners.

“I was told by the team after my stop that I was racing the cars ahead of me because they’d done both stops too. I passed a couple of cars, when the safety car came out again. I was behind Timo Scheider and the safety car picked him up, so I thought I was in second. The Timo passed the safety car, I asked the team what the situation was and they said I ‘overtake and push!’ so I did.”

Now at the back of the pack, Jamie again passed some more cars, eventually working his way up to sixth place.

“I feel much more comfortable with the 2007-spec tyres now. The pace in the race was good, we just didn’t have the best strategy.”

Next up is Jamie’s home race at Brands Hatch. He led there last year before spinning down to second.

“I’ve got a massive desire to win. But it’s important to keep a clear focus and not to push too much for it. I seemed to have a good handle on Brands last year, so hopefully it will be the same this time. The 2007 Mercedes will still be 14kilos lighter than the Audi, so we should be in good shape.”
