Tough time at Zandvoort
Before we arrived in Zandvoort we were not quite sure what to expect. My car was 10 kilos heavier than the 08 Audis and last year at Zandvoort the 08 Audis performed very well at Zandvoort. So on paper it looked like it was going to be a very tough weekend for us but we were confident that the 08 Mercedes had improved since Zandvoort last year.
Saturday Mornings free practice started wet but then dried up. At the end of the free practice session we wanted to run a new set of tyres but we had some technical problems, which prevented us from completing a timed lap on the new tyres. This was not the ideal preparation for qualifying.
My first run in Qualifying was not really quick enough so I did another run and improved my time that put me through to Q2. In Q2 we did two runs again and I ended 3rd quickest at the end of the session - because we had ran two sets of new tyres in both Q1 and Q2 we only had the one set of new tyres remaining for Q3. On my one lap I wasn’t able to match my best time form Q2 and this put me 7th on the grid.
The warm up of Sunday didn’t go as we would have liked, as I wasn’t 100% happy with my car balance and pace.
At the start I got my technique a little bit wrong with the clutch, which resulted with me getting a poor start. I lost places on the first lap and dropped back to 12th position. I was following Tom Kristensen and Marcus Winkelhock and I was a similar pace but was not able to overtake. My 1st pit stop was early unfortunately the pit stop was a bit slower than normal. The 2nd stint was short and that meant my last stint was 25 laps. After the pit stops I wasn’t able to gain any positions apart from when Mike Rockenfeller retired.
I finished the race 12th.
We will hopefully have a better weekend in Oschersleben – Ill see you there.
