Round 1

On Friday it was a strange feeling not to be testing and I had to keep reminding myself it was Friday and not Thursday.

We had the roll out on Friday evening and it was raining torrentially so therefore my engineer Martin made the decision that we would not to leave the pit garage.

On Saturday morning the weather was dry but the circuit was still damp in a few areas from over night rain.  I did one lap on slick tyres and on my second lap I ran a little bit too wide on turn one and drove over the temporary kerb, which unfortunately damaged a part on my engine.  This lead to me not being able to take part in the rest of the session.

We later found out that we had to change engines, which meant I had to start the race from last position on the grid.  We did not take part in qualifying as it was not possible for the mechanics to change the engine in the short space of time between practice and qualifying.  As I had to start from last position on the grid it would have been pointless anyway.  I watched qualifying from the pit garage this was odd as I am usually in the car and it is a part of the weekend that I really enjoy.

On Sunday the weather was dry again and we had a relatively trouble free warm up.  I was happy with the car and looking forward to the race.

I wasn’t sure how to approach the race as starting from last on the grid you clearly have to over take a lot of cars but at the same time you want to stay out of trouble.  Being the 1st race of the season it was quite likely that there would be a few incidents especially on the first lap.  Unfortunately I wasn’t able to avoid one of the incidents on the first lap at the hairpin and hit another car with my front left corner. This did some damage to my steering but mainly to the bodywork.  The damage affected the cars aerodynamics which meant that I had to drive the remaining 38 laps with a very strange handling car that prevented me from showing me and my cars full potential – bearing that in mind I was very happy to finish the race in 8th position and to come away with a point from a very difficult weekend.

I would really like to thank Team Persson for all their hard work over the weekend.

Looking forward to the Euro Speedway Lausitzring!
