Four stops and no points at Le Mans

Jamie Green’s hope of turning his excellent qualifying performance into a podium finish at the Le Mans Bugatti circuit, were hit hard when he was forced to make his fourth pitstop of the race.

After qualifying on the front row – the quickest of the Mercedes-Benz cars – Jamie went to the grid on wet tyres, as rain early on had left the track surface damp.

Yet it was soon apparent that slicks were the tyres to have, and combined with a tap from one of his rivals, he found himself slipping down the early order.

“When the team made the decision to go for wets the track looked pretty wet and I thought it was the right choice,” he said. “But by the time we did the formation lap I couldn’t believe how much it had dried up, and I knew we were going to be in trouble.”

With the pit window not yet opened, Jamie decided it was worth the gamble of an early change to slicks, even though it wouldn’t count as one of his two mandatory stops. But following the change he was one of the fastest cars on track and started to claw his way back into contention.

As the second pit window opened, it started to drizzle again, and Jamie wanted to assess the weather before making his stop. But with the window closing the team called him in and a fresh set of slicks was put on. Not long after he rejoined the rain started to get heavier.

“I asked the team what position I was in, and they said P8. I thought from there it was worth a gamble to pit and get wets on, but unfortunately it didn’t work out.”

Jamie’s fourth stop dropped him to 10th, which was where he finished.

“I had four stops and I finished 29 seconds behind the leader. A stop costs about 25/26 seconds, so I could have been in contention for a podium. “It’s disappointing because I was pleased with my performance, but I’ve got nothing to show for it.”

It was the first time this season that Jamie failed to finish in the points. He has one more race to go, the DTM finale at Hockenheim on October 26.

“I’ll just go there and try to do the best I can in qualifying. Obviously I’ll try to help Paul di Resta win the title if I can, but I just want to go there and do my best.”
