Unfortunate eighth in Spain

Jamie Green left Barcelona with just one point added to his DTM tally after a crazy last lap at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Going onto the final lap Jamie was running in fifth place, but had been delayed by a group of battling backmarkers, which allowed Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom to catch him. As Jamie braked for the first corner, Ekstrom dived down the inside into a gap that no longer existed.

As Ekstrom locked his brakes he collided with Jamie, punting the Mercedes C-class into a spin. Jamie quickly recovered, and within three corners was back on Ekstrom’s tail. Unbeknown to Jamie, Ekstrom’s car was damaged. Jamie picked up a much better exit from turn six, but Ekstrom defended aggressively forcing both cars off line.

They continued to run side by side into the following chicane. On the exit Jamie was on the outside and looked set to reclaim fifth place. But Ekstrom forced the Mercedes into the gravel. When Jamie finally rejoined he crossed the line eighth, but both drivers were called to explain their actions to the race officials.

Ekstrom was handed a 50-second penalty for his move in turn one, which briefly promoted Jamie to seventh. But after the second incident was reviewed, both drivers were judged to have been at fault. Ekstrom was thrown out of the meeting, while Jamie was given a 30-second penalty for ‘causing an avoidable collision’. This penalty demoted him back to eighth.

“It’s a strange decision,” said Jamie. “Coming out of turn six he moved fully over to the right, which put both of us completely off line for the next corner. There was only very minor contact. At the final corner I was on the outside and he kept coming over on me.

“I didn’t make a great start, but I had the outside line into the first corner, which put on the inside for turn two, so I thought I’d make up some places. But I was squeezed and this cost me a place to Mike Rockenfeller.

“I was stuck behind him for most of the race, and that forced me to run at his pace. We jumped him by pitting early for the second stop, but that meant I was struggling with worn tyres in the final laps, which was how Ekstrom was able to catch me.

“The championship looks lost to me now. I just need to concentrate on getting the best result I can in the remaining to races and not worry about anything else. That’s the best I can do.”

The next round of the series takes place at the Le Mans Bugatti circuit in France on October 5.
