Jamie denied podium chance

Jamie Green set the fastest lap of the race at Oschersleben on Sunday, yet he came away from the DTM event empty handed after a drive-through penalty ended his hopes of a possible top-three finish.

After struggling to get the best from the tyres for qualifying at the season opener in Hockenheim, Jamie went into round two of the series determined to get his Mercedes-Benz C-Class into the top eight qualifying shoot-out. This he achieved with a solid fifth fastest time, and when he recorded the fastest lap in the pre-race warm-up, he looked good for a strong showing.

“I stalled just before the lights came on, but I got the car going, but didn’t make the best of starts,” he admitted. “This put me behind Christian Abt, who was defending hard, but not very fast. I told the team I was losing time and they brought me in as soon as they could.”

After the first of his two mandatory pitstops Jamie was flying, and recorded the outright fastest lap of the race as he chased down the cars ahead. One of these was the Audi of Mike Rockenfeller – who eventually finished third. The two of them came up to Vanina Ickx, who was ahead on the road as she’d yet to make a stop. Rockenfeller got through but Jamie didn’t quite make it.

“I got half way down inside but wasn’t sure I was going to make it,” he said. “But this put me on the wrong side for the next corner, so I decided to back off and get back inside. But just as I decided to do this, so did she. There was contact and she hit the wall pretty hard.”

The race stewards decided Jamie was at fault and punished him with a drive-through penalty. This dropped him towards the back of the field and although he continued to push, the best he could do was 11th.

However, he had shown excellent pace, and with the EuroSpeedway race at Lausitz next up, he’s confident things are set to turn around.

“I’ve raced at Lausitz three times now, and have gone well there in the past. Last year I had good pace in qualifying but struggled in the races, but now I’ve shown good race pace too. I just need it to all come together.”
