Podium joy for Jamie

Jamie Green racked up the 10th podium finish of his DTM career in a rain-hit event at Nurburgring.

When qualifying was rained off mid-session, the grid positions were set by the times recorded in the opening session, in which Jamie was 13th, rather than the second session where he was sixth fastest.

But with the weather at Nurburgring notoriously unpredictable, the gamble in the race was what tyre to start on. “I was sitting on the grid and there was rain on my windscreen and I was thinking ‘I’m glad I don’t have to make the call on what tyres to put on’. I let my engineer make the decision as he was the one with the weather information. The Audis were obviously hoping for rain, and the warm-up lap was the slowest I’ve driven!”

With many of the pack ahead of Jamie pitting for slicks before the race even started, his progress was made easier, but with a good start and being on the right tyres, Jamie soon worked his way into the points.

“I had a good start, passed a few people and had a bit of a battle with Ralf (Schumacher). Even though it was spitting a bit the times were still quick.”

Jamie worked his way up to third through the two pitstop phases, but in the final stages of the race the rain started to fall heavily. From second place Paul di Resta pitted for wets, but Jamie opted to carry on to the finish on slicks.

“In the end it was so wet I was just sliding about all over the place. The team was giving me the gap to the group behind I and I was keeping that steady. It would have been easy to lock-up and go off in those conditions.”

On his wet tyres di Resta was making his was back up the order, and with two laps to go he repassed Jamie for second. Still, from 13th on the grid Jamie was very happy to have kept up his record of scoring in every race and is now just four points behind series leader Timo Scheider.

“It could have been one of those races where everything goes wrong for you, so to come home third was a pretty good result.”

Next up is Jamie’s home race at Brands Hatch. He came close to winning there in 2006 and ’07, but circumstances worked against him. This time he’s hoping to get a great result and build towards his title challenge.

“It’s not going to be easy as the Audis will be 10kg lighter than us, but I’ll be pushing as hard as I can to get a good result.”
