Jamie gets Norisring revenge

Jamie Green claimed victory at the classic Norisring street circuit and in doing so banished memories of 2006 when he was denied victory after being baulked by a backmarker.
From second on the grid Jamie made an excellent start and led into the first corner. In the opening laps he struggled with oversteer in his Mercedes-Benz C-class, but as the race wore on the balance improved and he opened up a comfortable gap. Later in the race, team-mate Bruno Spengler caught Jamie as the oversteer returned. A small mistake on the way into the chicane allowed Spengler to briefly lead, but Jamie had the better exit and was ahead running into the final hairpin.
For the final 20 laps Spengler was right on Jamie’s tail, but Jamie kept his cool and held on for his second win of the season, and his fourth in the past seven DTM races.
“It’s great for me to win at Norisring and get rid of the memories of 2006,” he said. “In the closing stages I knew Bruno was quicker than me, but I also knew that unless I made a mistake there was no way he could pass me. Rather than push for the final tenth or two, I just concentrated on not making a mistake – it’s very easy to hit the wall at the chicane and to lock up under braking for the hairpins where it’s very bumpy.”
Jamie’s win takes him to second in the championship table, just a point behind series leader Timo Scheider.
“I’m not really thinking about the championship because once you start doing that you lose focus on the real job, which is winning the next race. I knew that if we consistently picked up points we’d be there or there abouts in the championship. I’ve proved I can win races, and there’s no reason why I shouldn’t win more this season.”
Next up is Zandvoort, the former home of the Dutch Grand Prix. It’s a track that Jamie likes, and it’s one that’s been kind to him in the past too – he claimed the Formula 3 Euro Series title there in 2004, and was on pole for the 2006 DTM race.
“It’s a very different track to Norisring, but it’s one that I really like the layout of. There are lots of fast challenging corners and I’m really looking forward to racing there.”
