Solid fifth for Jamie at EuroSpeedway
Jamie Green kept up his DTM title challenge with fifth place at the EuroSpeedway in Lausitz.
Jamie was queued up behind a gaggle of cars headed by team-mate Bruno Spengler in the beginning stages of the race, but an early pitstop allowed him to leapfrog the Canadian and take fifth place. But it also meant he had to make his final set of tyres last 31 laps, and in the circumstances he was pleased to add a further four points to his tally.
“It’s important to score as many points as possible when you’re not quick, so this was damage limitation really,” he said. “We were a bit nearer the pace in the race than we were over the rest of the weekend – we made a change in the warm-up that seemed to work – and I think if we hadn’t been held up behind Bruno at the start a podium would have been possible.
“In the race I just wasn’t quick enough in the right places to attempt any overtaking. There were times when I could have tried a risky move, but when you’re fighting for a championship every point counts.”
There’s now a five-week gap before the next round of the series, held on the unique Norisring street track. After Audi dominated the start of the season, Mercedes drivers have won the past two races and Jamie is optimistic this run can be continued.
“Mercedes has worked very hard and developed the car and things are now very close,” he said. “I think it will now boil down to some tracks suiting our car better and others suiting the Audi. The Mercedes has been competitive at Norisring in the past, so I think we should go well. Obviously I’m hoping to add a few more wins and keep up the fight for the championship.”
